Homeschool Day 3/18/11
"Shear Madness"
Our Farm Tour is all about education (and fun!) – Come out for a great day with Jerry Ladd, Owner of Tri-Ply Fibers, he will be demonstrating a traditional style of shearing sheep. This will be a very educational and hands-on day!
When is it?
Friday, March 18th, 2011. Come out for the educational farm tour at either 10am or 12:30pm for the course.
What is it?
The kids will join us for an educational (and fun!!) day on the farm! Along with the Agritainment tour where your youngsters will learn where milk comes from, what kind of tools do we use on the farm, what do cows eat, what do we do for cow comfort, the medicines we use, and much more. How much more? Well, how 'about a tractor pulled hay ride to see our working 1,000 cow dairy? or hand feeding our donkey, goats, horses; or petting bunnies or holding a real chicken?! Plus this year Jerry Ladd, Owner of Tri-Ply Fibers, will be demonstrating a traditional style of shearing sheep. Jerry will remove the wool fleece from the sheep in a calm, safe, and humane manner that is used all over the world today. After each sheep is shorn, Jerry will demonstrate traditional hand processing of a wool fleece from its raw form directly off the sheep to being washed then hand-spun into yarn.
Tri-Ply Fibers is based on what we term the "Wool" Circle where wool quality is at the forefront by reducing contamination, carefully sorting and packaging wool, shearing technique, skirting, and general field classing. Shearing, fiber preparation, spinning, and knitting, (the full "Wool" Circle) can all be done from one fleece, and the livestock surrounding us can provide useful, beautiful, and unique items that will last for years. The "Wool" Circle also represents the importance that wool is a renewable crop that it must be sheared annually. Wool in particular is an amazing product. It is water resistant, fire resistant, and can keep a person warm or cool in the most extreme weather conditions.
We've got great speakers and presentations geared for your homeschool child. This is all in addition to our great farm tour, hay ride, petting zoo, haymaze and fun we provide. As an added bonus we will open up our Milk Bar, FREE for everyone!
Who can come?
Anyone and Everyone!
Why are you doing it?
Our farm tour has always been a favorite for homeschool families. We wish to expand the learning opportunities here on the farm to better educate the public about farming on a variety of levels. There are many Agriculture groups with great programs who visit public schools, however homeschoolers are often left out. We will bring these opportunities to the farm for everyone to enjoy.
How does it work?
Come out to the farm at 10am or 12:30pm and enjoy the farm with the family. The animals, hay maze and Farm Store will be open all day long - till 4pm.
There will also be hands-on displays of some tools we use on the farm along with feeds and other interesting items to explore.
Parents can join the children or leave their well-behaved children in our tour barn during the lesson. This is an opportunity for parents to network in our picnic area, meditate alone, or get lost in our haymaze! (But stay close parents! if we cant find you the resident farm baby sitter for unruly kids is an ornery bull!)
What does it cost?
Individual families can enjoy the presentations and the free milk bar for normal tour admission pricing. Large Home School groups (20 or more) and associations can contact the farm in advance to arrange a school discount. It's a bargain at any price! Seating is limited – reserve a seat for your child today!
